Thanking God for America
Dear Happy Fourth of July! Let’s take a moment today to thank God for the opportunity we have to live in the most free, most prosperous nation in the world— ever. The founders of our country formed a nation that largely reflected Christian values– a nation whose founding documents explicitly protect our God-given rights and recognize Who they come from. The foundation they set respects human dignity and protects individual rights better than any government in history. Many of the founders highlighted the importance of recognizing that our rights come from God alone. They knew that if God was removed from the public and political spheres, our rights would soon be violated. “The Sacred Rights of Mankind are not to be rummaged from among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the Hand of the Divinity itself, and can never be erased or obscured by moral power…” wrote Alexander Hamilton just before the Revolution in 1774. Others emphasized that only a moral and religious people– meaning people who practiced biblical Christianity– could sustain the republic they had established. “One great advantage of the Christian religion is that it brings the great principle of the law of nature and nations – Love your neighbor as yourself, and do to others as you would that others should do to you, – to the knowledge, belief, and veneration of the whole people…No other institution for education, no kind of political discipline, could diffuse this kind of necessary information, so universally among all ranks and descriptions of citizens,” wrote John Adams in 1796. Our nation’s 247th birthday gives parents and others an incredible teachable moment with children as we share with them the history of our nation’s founding and its deep Christian roots. Maybe even read the Declaration of Independence with your family and pay attention to the Christian references and themes. At a minimum, take time to pray together in gratitude to God for the blessing of living in America, as well as interceding on behalf of our nation. Despite the deep division and progressive ideology pervading our culture, we still live in the only country in the world that was founded on a Christian idea– virtuous freedom. For that, we should celebrate and express our gratitude. For marriage, family, life, & religious freedom, |
